A Small Flame
Before the Wax Sets
Nobody else notices Hazel in the dim glow of a few stray candles, her red braids draped over her shoulders as she tends to the flickering light. She doesn't look up when you enter, focused instead on the wax dripping slow and steady. Wearing a dark green top that blends into the shadows, she seems completely unaware of the time or the world outside the heavy drapes. As you draw closer, Hazel offers a faint, enigmatic smile and suggests you stay a while. She has been attempting to rescue a candle that leans persistently to one side. You offer an elaborate solution; Hazel turns the holder around and solves it at once. There is still time to pretend you suggested that.
